I love cake. Who doesn’t love cake? And it’s one of the central parts of a wedding. Full of tradition and cutting that wedding cake is one of the most photographed moments.
So 2011 brides, this is what your cake may be like for your wedding:
Buttercream – Forget the fondant! Buttercream is better. Seriously. You can argue about the look, but who can deny the taste of a super creamy sweet and lovely buttercream frosting compared to a plasticy looking fondant? When frosted evenly {and with a steady hand!} you can still get the smooth look:

Flavor – Since we are talking taste. New yummy flavors are coming to the forefront. Your auntie and older reles may still like the fruit but you need to have your cake and eat it too! Go for a flavor you like and ask your baker what else is on offer other than fruit, carrot and biscuit. Try {the dramatic looking} Red Velvet, Chocolate Hazelnut, Chocolate orange, Vanilla Bean, Almond, Lemon or Orange and fill them with something nice like dark or white chocolate ganache or Caramel Buttercream. {OMG yum!} Your guests will thank you for it. Here is the Red velvet cake:

Height-Cakes are getting taller- Really towering cakes are normally for mor formal weddings but whether you have more layers because you need them or want to add a fake tier to get the height, stack em high for drama. Like this one: {which is buttercream again by the way}:

2 Tier – A bit more rustic or vintage, this may seem to contradict the above but not really, have your baker double stack two cakes and frost together for height. Or if your wedding {and your budget} is smaller, put your cake on a fabulous stand to add the height and drama. See how this cake is layered under the frosted layer for height:

Or put your cake on a lovely tall cake stand like this:

Desserts/cake table- Mix things up a bit and give your guests some selection. Get a smaller cake and offer cupcakes, tarts, cookies, cake pops, any kind of baked goods and make a beautiful display out of it. This is great to add focus to an otherwise usless wall or corner of your venue too. Have a look at this one:

Big single flower – 2011 won’t see so much of the multi- all over the cake flowers {a la Donald Trump}, bright colors or really busy over decorated cakes. Keep it classic with few and simple designs and guess what? You will still think it’s beautiful in 20 years.

Black and white – A monochrome cake can look striking! Just don’t overdo the black or it won’t look appetizing. This is black and white done tastefully with lovely detail:

So based on the above, the perfectly on trend wedding cake for 2011 is…
But which one would you choose? Share your cake ideas with me, I’d love to hear – and see them!
